It’s been more than eight years since Randy Travis last released a country album; the wait for fans is over tomorrow when Around The Bend hits the market.
Randy’s been nationally known for more than 20 years, and he remains a big enough star that when he signed autographs at the CMA Music Festival in June, he needed 10 people to usher him through the crowd when he was done. Being followed by hordes of strangers is "a little unusual," Randy admits, but he also notes that he got prepared for audiences by working almost 10 years in clubs before he had his first hit.
"When I started workin' for an audience doing 'On The Other Hand,' '‘1982,' with Warner [Bros. Records], I’d been workin' for an audience so long," he says. "It’s just a bigger audience. When it had grown to the point that you’re lookin’ at thousands, nerves did play into that a little bit more, but the main thing, as far as nerves getting to me early on, were those times walkin' on at awards shows getting ready to sing, looking out at those people sitting right there from [George] Jones, Tammy [Wynette], Loretta [Lynn], Hank [Williams] Jr. and Vern Gosdin and people like that, and thinkin, 'I need to just leave now. I’m not sure I can finish this song.'"
Randy has not only performed at awards shows — he’s won a ton of trophies himself, including three Grammy Awards that he earned for gospel albums in the last eight years.
He’ll be playing for very large audiences this week in a run of national TV appearances to promote Around The Bend. He’s on "The Late Show With David Letterman" Tuesday, "Good Morning America" Wednesday, "Regis & Kelly" Thursday and "The Today show" Friday.
