"You got fins to the left, fins to the right, and you’re the only bait in town." So goes the chorus of one of Jimmy Buffett’s classic songs, and Kenny Chesney — who’s built part of his career around Jimmy’s island-escape imagery — is apparently intrigued by the song’s topic. His to-do list includes a deep-sea encounter with danger.
"I’d like to swim with sharks," he told the national radio show GAC Nights: Live From Nashville. "That’d be great. I was watching this thing on TV the other day about how these people would go and get in these cages and swim with sharks. It was like, ‘Wow!’ That’d be a rush. You know, I saw that movie [The Bucket List]. I don’t want to jump out of an airplane. I don’t like heights. I don’t want to bungee jump, you know? There are other things that’d make you feel alive ... So, yeah, one day I’d love to do that. I’d love to swim with sharks. It’d be a big rush for me. To be that close to a great white, it’d be really, really awesome."
Of course, there are plenty of struggling artists and songwriters who’d say that working in the music business is, in essence, swimming with sharks. Kenny’s obviously done pretty well at that. In fact, he’s the top nominee in the industry-voted Country Music Association Awards, with his name appearing seven times on the ballot. The 42nd annual honors will be handed out at Nashville’s Sommet Center on Nov. 12.
