Memorial Day weekend - great ride, great day and remembrance...
Wed. May 28, 2008
You never know what's going to happen during spring time in good old Cincinnati and the surrounding areas. Could be sunny and gorgeous or it could be pouring rain and thunderstorms and I've even seen it be cold and snow. This past Sunday, the weather in our area was just right for hitting the road on a scooter. Sunny, high 70's and moderate humidity.
Me and 3 other friends lit out from the Forest Park Cracker Barrel for a ride down to the quaint little town known as Rabbit Hash in northern KY around 10am. Rabbit Hash basically consists of a general store, a river view and has elected a black lab named JR as mayor (see pix). Unfortunately, his honor was indisposed so we didn't get to meet him. A little expressway, a ride on a ferry and lots of country back roads. We rode nearly 200 miles, going to Rabbit Hash then down to Markland damn, into VeVay Indiana out by BelleTerra casino and back along the river on IN 56 to come home. The roads are a little confusing on the way in and we met a couple from Grand Rapids MI who were looking for Rabbit Hash as well; they followed us. Of course, the first thing we did was go the wrong way - twice! But, we made it to Rabbit Hash, made some new friends and saw some new places. And that's what riding is all about. at least for me. We had some chicken wings, a few beers and a generally great time.
When you're cruising out those country back roads on a big bike, it's a little different than riding in a car - you can see more clearly around you, hear the sounds and smell the smells and feel the road. And you (or at least I) tend to do a little more reflecting. I had one of the best days I've had in a long time and I was grateful that I live in a country where these things are our right. And while I was enjoying the simple pleasures of wind, sun, friends and a big ole Harley, I remembered that Memorial Day is about a lot more than just rides and cookouts. It's about the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to provide us with the freedom to enjoy these simple pleasures and many more. Someone once said that freedom isn't free - it's paid for with the blood of patriots. Please join me in expressing our sincere thanks and gratitude to the men and women in our armed forces who put themselves in harm's way on our behalf, and for those in harm's way now, please come home safe. And please always remember and honor the one's who purchased our freedom with their lives. For your sacrifice and service, Thank you.
