biography
In 1997 Mike Rodgers traveled from Little Rock, Arkansas to Nashville to fulfill his dream in the music business. With little money in his pockets Rodgers’ lived out of his car for a couple of weeks, not knowing that he would soon find a way to generate income as a professional boxer. The story of Rodgers pro boxing career is nothing short of legendary. Rodgers learned about professional boxing shows held in downtown Nashville when he was offered a chance in the ring. Rodgers first professional boxing license bears the address of a local honky-tonk bar because his car was his home. Rodgers still keeps that boxing license in his wallet as a reminder of his tremendous struggles. Rodgers entered the boxing ring in a pair of tennis shoes, swimming trunks and cowboy hat. A drunk in the crowd yelled: "Hey cowboy, who in the hell are you, the Honkytonk Hitman?" When Mike knocked out his 6'6" opponent in the first round, the nickname stuck and the legend of the Honkytonk Hitman began. After winning the WBF Super-Cruiserweight World Championship in 2002 with a second round knockout, Rodgers retired because of a shoulder injury with a record of 25 wins - 2 losses - with 20 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Honkytonk Hitman has since sold thousands of his critically acclaimed 2004 self-titled “Honkytonk Hitman” CD by thrilling crowds across the country with his original songs and amazing high energy shows. Honkytonk Hitman’s new CD - "Shake that Twang” was released in August and can be bought at his website.
