West Virginia’s smokin’ COALTRAIN is moving down the track, and pickin’ up a full head of steam! And they’re armed with their own unique sound —“country and mountain music”—steeped in the traditions of America’s rugged coal-producing belt in the Northeast and loaded with the flavor of the mountains and the earthy “twang” of their home state. It’s a sound that’s already winning over new crowds from the Northeast down to Nashville, where they have been living while recording their first CD release for veteran roots music label Reptile Records. It’s been a busy year for COALTRAIN. And the result is their debut CD, being released November 4th and featuring a rockin' brand of country, that is becoming identified as in the same ballpark with such mavericks as the Kentucky Headhunters and the Charlie Daniels Band. All the songs were written by band members and by hit Nashville songwriters, and range from fiery rockers to some soon-to-be classics. Establishing the solid, driving rhythm is the function of Chuck Pearson (formerly of the INSTA-GATORS) on drums and John "Sixball" McCombs on bass. While they keep the train on the track, Joe Carr adds his own chuggin' rhythms (electric/acoustic guitar/mandolin) and John Bowman the electrifying guitar leads. Add to this Chris Denham's lead vocals and hell-raisin' fiddle and you have COALTRAIN. The group was steered to Nashville label owner/producer Scott Tutt of the prestigious veteran roots country label, Reptile Records who quickly saw hit-making potential. They renamed themselves COALTRAIN, “because that’s how they sound, like a coal train blowin’ out smoke and pulling those carloads of raw energy down the line.” (Tutt’s propensity for discovering new talent was firmly established back in the late ‘70s, when he was the first Nashville executive to recognize the exciting potential of soon-to-be-superstars Alabama, whom he would then produce and also name.) COALTRAIN performed on Friday, July 14th show at the prestigious JAMBOREE IN THE HILLS in Morristown, OH, live in front of over 45,000 people, with a TV and radio audience numbering thousands more. Sharing the star-laden bill with some of country music's top names, including Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Montgomery Gentry and Earl Thomas Conley, COALTRAIN took full advantage of their first opportunity to perform for such a powerful audience and enormous press corps, and was a huge success with the crowd. Throughout the 4-day event their time was filled with radio, TV and newspaper interviews introducing them to an entirely new audience from all over the country. Following that performance the group had to immediately return to Nashville to work on finalizing their first Reptile CD, which features 12 cuts, highlighted by such standouts as their mind-blowing opener, “If You Want To Get To Heaven” to the poignant, pace-changing ballad “I’ll Give You Time.” And for future classics there is also “Burn The Last Honky Tonk Down” as well as the anthem “Coaltrain.” Also included in the menu is the song chosen as the theme for COALTRAIN’s first product release tour, “Nowhere West Virginia,” to be launched immediately. . With the CD now released to radio and retail, COALTRAIN will be fully loaded and ready to export "country & mountain music" to new fans throughout the U.S. and the world.
