IF I WAS YOUR GIRL Lauren Lucas (Soulthang) In the Music Row system, just because you get signed doesn’t mean you get to release an album—not unless you manage a hit single, anyway. Lauren Lucas’ 2005 album, The Carolina Kind, is still somewhere in the Warner Bros. vaults, probably buried under all those unreleased ’80s Prince tracks. Freed of her contractual obligations, Lucas at last made her proper debut this year with the smart, soulful and self-released EP If I Was Your Girl. LAUREN LUCAS Lauren Lucas' voice is a rare instrument, soaked in Southern soul and controlled with the precision of a musical theater veteran—which she is, having first hit the stage at age 3 and gotten herself nominated for a Tony a few years back. So it was no surprise when the South Carolina native was signed to Warner Bros. in 2003. This being Nashville and all, it was also no surprise when the label declined to release what would have been her very fine debut album, The Carolina Kind, due to a puzzling lack of interest from country radio. Having at last been liberated from her major-label contract last year, Lucas is now free to make music people will get the chance to, you know, actually buy. She's planning to release an independent EP soon, and her song "American Babe," a drastic detour into Bollywood pop featured in the comedy Americanizing Shelley, is available now at iTunes. 12th & Porter —CHRIS NEAL Americanizing Shelley--- the movie Lauren was invited to write and record a song for the upcoming movie, "Americanizing Shelley," which hits theaters on May 4, 2007!
