For me, one of the coolest things ever is when some of the artists actually come to know you, know you by name, are happy to see you and love your support. You don't usually get that kind of connection in other genres. The members of BlackHawk went out of their way to spend time individually with the fans they saw as more "friends than fans" and when they come to hang out with you, it's something you never forget. I once sent Henry Paul a Birthday gift years ago. I had only met him once before that. About a year later, he thanked me from the stage at a show. There was no meet~n~greet that night but he later insisted I come into the restaurant which had been closed while they dined. Two years ago, a group of us fans hung out together in a Motel room in Sheboygan, WI. Chris's cell phone rang and it was Henry asking where we were partying. Then there was Dave and Anthony playing golf in the hallway until we were shushed because people complained about not being able to sleep the night before due to the rowdy goings on of Whitesnake or some group. We followed the group from show to show in 4 cities over 4 days and on the last day, I along with some friends were invited on the bus. I've had people ask me how I've managed to meet so many. My reply to that is, a great credit score, a lot of debt, sometimes sleepless days, sometimes waiting for hours in all kind of weather. Whatever it took, that's what we do when you love Country. You know I once had Ronnie Dunn paged in a casino! He never picked up the phone though. LOL The way I see it, you can't take it with you (money that is) when you pass on from this life and your debt is no one else's to leave behind. The group BlackHawk has consisted of some of the finest musicians, singers and songwriters out there and while there were a lot of great times for them and for the fans, there have also been times of frustration for us all as well. I'm not sure how long the large labels can continue to stifle creativity in exchange for some right off the conveyor belt product, forcing many to turn to Indie labels. And if you're trying to pay the bills doing what you love to do, it can be a long, hard struggle without some major capital to get your stuff out there so you can experience success with longevity.
So, I chose not to go to Nashville, I really wanted to see the guys as they were then one last time but I just couldn't say goodbye. When something works it works and it's hard to let go of it. I will continue to support each individual as much as I can through their endeavors to make great music but there was a time when the chemistry was so right.
Now that we have this blog feature, I'll be blogging quite a bit. I keep saying I should write a book about Country Music from a fan's perspective!
