Something that happens all the time, yet it can be the hardest thing to accept. Last weekend I was supposed to be in Nashville to attend a show at the Wildhorse Saloon. I'd actually started making plans, checking flights, room reservations, etc. but a voice inside of me told me not to go because going would have been really emotional and tearful. You see, this was the last show for BlackHawk (my favorite group) as we knew them. Over the years, especially in the '90's they enjoyed quite a bit of success. Then the industry began to change and founding member Van Stephenson passed away in 2001. The guys pushed on and brought in more new talent along the way. Eventually they were picked up by a couple of other labels that consequently folded. I guess after 15 years of touring and performing to smaller crowds night after night, making less and less money takes its toll.
I was not a fan in the early '90's, hadn't even started to listen to Country music until 1996. I was in a completely new environment and it took a few years I would say before I picked up enough momentum to become a fan's fan. What I mean by that is, if I could get to a show by car the road was my carpet. If it was just way too far to drive to, sometimes white knuckled flights carried me to my destination. If you've never been to my website, you wouldn't know that I've been to over 100 concerts, fairs and festivals, not to mention Fan Fair a number of times. In 2004 I said hello to Keith Urban in the audience for the American Music Awards in LA. The look on his face was OMG, what are you doing here? Can't say we went just to see Keith because it was grand prize trip in a contest. In doing so, I've met some really great people who became friends and a ton of artists. To be continued
