Knoxville church shooting
Coverage of the shooting that occurred at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday July 27.
When the lead singer of the country group Alabama comes to Knoxville for a concert benefiting victims of the July 27 shooting at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, every penny should go to victims.
Mike Hammond, program director of WIVK-FM, said the venue - the Cotton Eyed Joe nightclub off Lovell Road - is donating use of its facility, sound and light equipment for the concert on Friday, Aug. 15.
Club owner Gingi Bakri said, "I just feel there is no place for hate in this community and people are being (wrongfully harmed) for things. … We are part of the community, and we need to do everything we can to help out."
Singer Randy Owen called WIVK-FM last week wanting to help after the shooting, which left two dead and six injured by a gunman who police said was motivated by a hatred of liberals.
"We suggested he come in and do a concert," Hammond said.
The concert will start around 8 p.m., with a cover charge of $10 for those 21 and older and $15 for those between the ages of 18 and 20. Proceeds will be given to the victims of the shooting.
Owen is expected to perform hits of Alabama, which has had 42 No. 1 singles and has sold more than 73 million records, according to its Web site. In 2005, Alabama was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
"He'll have some new material that he'll be performing (as well)," Hammond said. "We just hope a lot of people will come out."
Nine local bands also have committed to playing a benefit show throughout the afternoon and into the evening of Aug. 15 at The Valarium, 1213 Western Ave., to aid the church.
The Valarium, too, has donated its building for the event while several local bands have donated their talent and time. No admission will be charged, but donations will be accepted.
