A FRIEND OF MINE
Wed. March 26, 2008
One day last May, I walked over to the Earlham bookstore to order some potential texts for a course I'd be teaching in the fall. After placing my order (thanks Traci), I stopped to look at the racks of greeting cards. They have some really pretty ones there. I like to mail them to my friends. Anyway, one card caught my eye. On it was a silver-white moon against a dark sky. I didn't buy it, but it stuck in my mind.
As I walked back across campus to my office, these words kept singing in my head:
When the clouds covered the moon
When the sun refused to shine
You were always a friend of mine
Instead of going back to work, I found the nearest keyboard and started laying down some chords. The first verse was finished in minutes. By the next afternoon so was the rest of the song.
I am fortunate still to have close friends I've known since birth (Judy), since high school (Roy) and since college (Debbi and Sandy--well, she's a little more than close). I fully expect at least some of you will remain my cyber- and IRL friends for many years. So I dedicate this song to you, my friends.
Hey, if this strikes a chord (no pun intended) in you, maybe reminds you of a good friend, please leave a comment. And thanks for listening.

A FRIEND OF MINE
by Philip C. Baisley ©2007 Baisltunes (ASCAP)
When the clouds covered the moon
When the sun for days refused to shine
When the world was a bitter cold and lonely place
You were always a friend of mine
When the rain just wouldn’t fall
And my soul was parched and dry
When my dreams lay buried in the shifting sand
You were always a friend of mine
But these words fail to describe
What I feel deep down inside
Just to know that you’re there
And to know that you care
Fans the faint spark of hope into flame into fire
When I’m weary from the fight
And no place of rest I find
When my last companion turns and walks away
You will be a friend of mine
But these words fail to describe
What I feel deep down inside
Just to know that you’re there
And to know that you care
Fans the faint spark of hope into flame into fire
When I’m weary from the fight
And no place of rest I find
When my last companion turns and walks away
You will be a friend of mine
When I finally come to the end of my days
You will be a friend of mine
You were always a friend of mine.
